How Writers of the West Positions Books to Compete for #1 on Amazon

How Writers of the West Positions Books to Compete for #1 on Amazon

Most authors publish a book and watch to see where it lands on Amazon. Writers of the West does something different. Before publication, we deliberately research where a book can genuinely compete and position it there.

We don’t publish a book and hope it ranks. We use a research and positioning system developed and refined through years of publishing experience to identify where each book can compete and how it should be positioned. That process has repeatedly produced #1 Amazon category results.

We don’t guarantee that every book will reach #1 because no publisher controls Amazon’s rankings. What we can show is the process we intentionally use to pursue those positions and documented examples of that process producing #1 results.

Why We Don’t Publish Immediately

A manuscript can be technically ready for Amazon before it’s strategically ready for Amazon.

The editing is done. The cover is designed. The formatting is correct. The book could go live today if you wanted it to. But Writers of the West takes up to 10 business days before publishing because we use that time to research where this specific book has the strongest opportunity to compete.

This research and preparation is why the books we publish often rank quickly. We’re not guessing at categories. We’re not hoping the title works. We’re not uploading and seeing what sticks.

The manuscript is ready. The book isn’t. That’s the difference.

Inside Our Amazon Positioning Process

Here’s what that ten-day research window covers.

Step 1: Identify and assess legitimate categories. We start by identifying all Amazon categories where the book genuinely belongs. Once we have those relevant categories, we evaluate them against a set of predetermined factors developed and refined through years of publishing experience. Competitiveness is one factor, but not the only one. The objective is to determine which relevant categories give this particular book the strongest opportunity to compete.

We don’t disclose the complete framework, weighting system, thresholds, or every factor we assess. That’s part of our internal publishing methodology. What matters is that we’re evaluating multiple dimensions—not simply choosing the category with the fewest competitors, but assessing where the book’s characteristics, audience, and market conditions align with the strongest opportunity.

Step 2: Evaluate each category against our internal framework. This is where the proprietary work begins. We use a set of predetermined factors developed and refined through years of publishing experience. We assess each potential category against those factors. Competitiveness is one of those factors, but it’s not the objective. The goal is to identify where this specific book has the strongest opportunity to compete given its characteristics, its audience, and the market conditions. We’re not simply choosing the category with the fewest competitors. We’re assessing multiple dimensions.

Step 3: Analyze the competitive environment. For the categories that remain promising, we study the books currently ranking at the top. We examine roughly the top 10–15 ranking titles and analyze observable patterns: titles, subtitles, descriptions, positioning, metadata, search language and other characteristics.

The point isn’t to copy those books. The point is to understand the competitive landscape and where our book can occupy its own position within it. “Why Are the Books in Our Finalized Categories Ranking?” is the key question here.

Step 4: Research how people actually search. An author might describe their book one way. The readers searching for that type of book might use different language entirely. We research the terminology and keywords people actually use when they’re looking for a book like yours. That’s not always identical to the terms the author chose.

Step 5: Identify the positioning opportunity. This is where category assessment, competitive analysis, and search data come together. We determine where and how your book can intelligently position itself to compete. This isn’t about finding the weakest competition or copying successful books. It’s about finding the opening where your book’s real strengths meet actual reader demand.

Step 6: Build the Amazon presence around that intelligence. The research informs the relevant elements of your listing: the title or subtitle if those are still flexible and editorially appropriate, the description, the back-cover copy, your metadata, your Author Central, your A+ Content if applicable. Each of these elements should perform its own job for the reader. Together, they support one coherent positioning strategy.

We don’t keyword-stuff everything. That doesn’t work anymore, and it makes your listing read like a list rather than marketing. The research is there. It informs the listing. It doesn’t dominate it.

Our Example Documented #1 Results

Our research and positioning system has repeatedly produced #1 Amazon category results. Here are four examples of books put through this process that achieved #1 positions with real-time snapshots and links.

Hagos Weldegebriel Debesay — Love Against the Wall

This example differs from the others: the screenshot documents a #1 position on Amazon’s Best Sellers chart rather than a New Release position. The book achieved this ranking within the first week of publication.

What #1 on Amazon Actually Means

Before you look at these screenshots, understand what they’re actually showing you.

Amazon categories exist at different levels. A #1 in New Releases in Paul’s Letters is not the same as #1 across all of Fiction. New Release and Best Seller charts measure different ranking contexts, with their own audience sizes and dynamics.

These four screenshots are historical documentation of what happened at specific moments in time. Amazon rankings change constantly as new books publish, readers make purchases, and market conditions shift. A book that was #1 when this screenshot was captured might occupy a different position today.

The point of these examples is to demonstrate that our research and positioning process has repeatedly produced #1 outcomes. It’s not to claim that these rankings remain permanent or that every future book will achieve the same result, because permanent ranking in any category on Amazon is simply not possible.

Can We Guarantee #1 on Amazon?

No.

We don’t control Amazon’s algorithms. We don’t control competing releases. We don’t control reader purchasing decisions. We don’t control broader market conditions. Those factors shift constantly and they determine where a book ultimately ranks.

What we do control is the pre-publication research and positioning work. We control the depth and quality of category analysis. We control how thoroughly we examine competition. We control how accurately we understand your audience’s search behavior. We control how intelligently we position your book given that research. We control the execution of the strategy before your book publishes.

The system has produced #1 repeatedly; results, across multiple books and categories. That’s what these examples document. Whether a future book achieves the same result depends partly on factors we can control and partly on factors we can’t.

Next Steps

If you’re ready to publish a book and you want to know what category research looks like for your specific project, reach out to our book publishing and marketing team. We’ll run the analysis and explain what’s possible for your book given the categories available, the competitive environment, and the research.

These four examples demonstrate what our process can achieve. Your book’s outcome depends on your manuscript, your category options, and the market conditions at your publication date. The work we do before publishing gives your book a deliberately researched foundation from which to compete.
