Self-Publishing Consultant: Services, Costs & Expert Advice

A self-publishing consultant is a paid advisor who helps authors publish a book under their own name while keeping their rights. First-time authors, business owners and experts hire one to plan editing, cover design, ISBNs, formatting, Amazon KDP and IngramSpark setup, and launch marketing. Unlike a traditional publisher, a consultant does not buy your rights or pay an advance. Most charge for their time rather than a share of royalties, and you stay the publisher.

At Writers of the West, your first conversation with a self-publishing consultant on our team is a free consultation. If you then want to hand off the editing, design and uploading, our self-publishing services take the manuscript all the way to a live retail listing.

What Does a Self-Publishing Consultant Do?

A self-publishing consultant reviews your manuscript and goals, then tells you what to do next and in what order: which edits the book needs, how to handle ISBNs, which platforms to use, and how to plan the launch.

Service What the Consultant Helps With
Manuscript evaluation Assessing editing and preparation needs
Editing Recommending the type of edit and suitable editors
Cover design Reviewing design requirements and genre positioning
ISBNs and copyright Explaining registration and ownership options
Book formatting Preparing files for print and ebook
Distribution Setting up Amazon KDP, IngramSpark and other channels
Book marketing Building a launch and promotion plan

An independent publishing consultant usually stays on the advice side, and you hire the editor, designer and formatter yourself. Some firms also do the work, so ask which tasks are advice and which are deliverables. If the review shows the manuscript needs a developmental or line edit, that work goes to a separate editor or to a team that offers book editing services.

A good consultant will also separate two things authors often confuse. Your work is under copyright the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form, such as a saved file, according to the U.S. Copyright Office. An ISBN identifies one edition and names a publisher of record. KDP’s free paperback ISBN registers the imprint as “Independently published” and can only be used on KDP. An ISBN you buy from Bowker carries your own imprint and works on any platform.

How Much Does a Self-Publishing Consultant Cost?

Self-publishing consulting ranges from free first consultations to about $75 an hour, and up to tens of thousands of dollars for coaching programs. Price depends on the consultant’s experience, the scope of the project, and whether they only advise or also do the work.

Type of Help Example Published Price Provider Price Status
One-time consultation $150 for one hour, $75 for 30 minutes Overcup Books Advertised by provider
Hourly consulting $75 per hour, packages on request The Editorial Department Advertised by provider
Publishing strategy and coaching programs $6,000 to $60,000+ Self-Publishing School, per publishing.co.uk Third-party report
Full-service publishing assistance $29,000 to $135,000 Scribe Media, per publishing.co.uk Third-party report
Free consultation, then full-service publishing Consultation free; packages on the pricing page Writers of the West Advertised by provider

Prices were checked in November 2026. Confirm them on each provider’s page before you budget.

Consulting fees cover advice, not production. Editing, cover design and printing are billed separately, and Bowker ISBNs cost $125 for one or $295 for ten. Uploading to Amazon KDP is free. IngramSpark charges no title setup fee and, since February 1, 2026, no revision fee. Launch promotion needs its own budget too, whether you run it yourself or use book marketing services.

Self-Publishing Consultant vs. Done-for-You Publishing Team

A consultant tells you what to do. A done-for-you publishing team does the editing, design, formatting, uploading and distribution for you. Either arrangement can leave you with your copyright and royalties, but only the signed agreement confirms it.

Factor Self-Publishing Consultant Done-for-You Publishing Team
Primary responsibility Advice and a publishing plan Producing and releasing the book
Hands-on work Usually none beyond reviews Editing, design, formatting and uploads
Pricing structure Hourly or per session Package price
Project management You coordinate each freelancer A project manager coordinates the team
Author ownership You keep copyright; ISBN ownership depends on who buys it You can keep copyright; check ISBN and account terms
Distribution help Guidance on KDP, IngramSpark and ebook retailers Setup and listings handled for you

Account ownership matters as much as price. When the book sits in your own KDP and IngramSpark accounts, royalties are paid to you directly. When a company publishes through its accounts, ask in writing how royalties are reported and how you take the book with you if you leave.

When Should You Hire a Publishing Consultant?

Hire a publishing consultant when a wrong decision would cost you more than the fee, usually before you pay for editing, ISBNs or a publishing package. For many authors, one hour of paid self-publishing advice is enough to set the order of work.

  1. Your manuscript is finished and you don’t know the next step. A consultant can tell you whether it needs a developmental edit or only a proofread.
  2. You are comparing KDP, IngramSpark and other platforms. KDP covers Amazon, while IngramSpark reaches bookstores and libraries, and many authors use both for the same paperback.
  3. You want guidance on editing, formatting and cover design. Knowing the trim size and page count early keeps the cover designer from redoing the spine.
  4. You need an ISBN and distribution strategy. Each format needs its own ISBN, so a paperback, hardcover and ebook may need three.
  5. You want an independent opinion before buying a package. A consultant can read a contract and flag rights clauses before you sign.

You may not need one at all. An author who has already released a book on KDP and IngramSpark, with editors and designers they trust, can usually manage the next title alone.

How to Choose the Right Self-Publishing Consultant

Pick a consultant whose claims you can check: real book credits, written prices, and clear answers about rights, ISBNs and accounts. Ask these questions before you pay a deposit.

  1. Which books have you helped release, and can I see them on Amazon or IngramSpark?
  2. What exactly do I receive, in writing, for the price?
  3. Do you take any percentage of my sales or rights?
  4. Whose name appears as publisher of record on the ISBN?
  5. Will the book be published in my own KDP and IngramSpark accounts?
  6. Can I speak with two authors you worked with in the past year?
  7. What happens if I stop halfway, and how many rounds of changes are included?

Can You Hire a Self-Publishing Consultant Online?

Yes. Most publishing consulting services can be provided remotely through video calls, document reviews and shared project boards.

A local self-publishing consultant suits authors who prefer meeting in person, but distance doesn’t change the work. KDP, IngramSpark, editing and ebook distribution all run online, so a book publishing consultant in another state can help you just as well.

Self-Publishing Guidance From Writers of the West

Writers of the West starts with a free consultation and then does the hands-on work. Our team handles manuscript editing and preparation, cover design and formatting, ISBN guidance, Amazon KDP and IngramSpark publishing, distribution and book marketing. Each book gets a dedicated project manager. Editing, publishing and distribution together usually take about two months. If you want professional support through the whole process rather than consulting alone, talk to our publishing team about your manuscript.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a self-publishing consultant worth it?

It is worth it when you are about to spend money you can’t easily get back, such as an edit at the wrong level, a cover that doesn’t fit your genre, or a package with unclear rights terms. Authors who have published before often don’t need one.

Do self-publishing consultants take royalties?

Most self-publishing consultants charge an hourly or package fee and take no royalties. Agreements vary, though, so read the payment and rights sections of any contract and confirm in writing that sales income from KDP and IngramSpark is paid to you.

Can a consultant help publish my book on Amazon?

Yes. Most consultants can guide you through Amazon KDP account setup, formatting requirements, categories, and book metadata such as the description and keywords. Some review your files before upload, while others walk you through each screen on a live call.

Do I need a publishing consultant if I use IngramSpark?

Not necessarily. IngramSpark is a print-on-demand and distribution platform that makes your book available to retailers and libraries. It does not edit your manuscript, design your cover or plan your launch, so many authors still bring in an editor or consultant for that work.
