Writers of the West

Writing, editing & publishing for Dallas authors

Dallas Book Publishing for Authors

Dallas authors come to Writers of the West at very different stages. Some bring only an idea, others bring notes or recorded interviews, a half-finished draft or a complete manuscript. The team picks up from wherever the book is: writing or ghostwriting it, editing it, then handling formatting, cover design, publishing and distribution. You only pay for the stages your book actually needs, and you keep the rights to the finished work.

Take Your Book From Manuscript to Publication in Dallas

There are three ways into Dallas book publishing with us. Choose the one that matches your manuscript, and continue as far as you want.

Writing

Have Your Book Written From an Idea or Notes

Ghostwriting for Dallas authors who haven't written the manuscript themselves starts here. An idea is enough to begin: interviews and conversations supply the source material, and any notes, journals or recordings you already have speed that up. Writers are matched on genre, subject and voice, and you review chapters as they're drafted and ask for changes (how the writing process works).

Editing

Develop and Edit Your Manuscript

Authors who already have a draft can enter at manuscript editing rather than starting with ghostwriting. Developmental editing works on structure and story, line editing on the prose itself, and proofreading catches the final errors before publication. For book editing in Dallas, the editors work at whichever level your draft needs (details on each editing level).

Publishing

Prepare and Publish Your Book

Once the text is final, the publishing team formats the interior for ebook, paperback and hardcover, designs the cover, sets up the ISBN and prepares the listings. The book then goes live on the retail platforms included in your package (publishing options in full).

A Book Team Built Around the Author

A Dallas publishing company that only publishes can't help with an unfinished draft, and a freelance editor can't design your cover. Here the team is assembled around what your book needs.

Match the Project With the Right People

Depending on the stage, your book may involve a writer, an editor, a quality reviewer, a designer and a publishing specialist, coordinated by one project manager. Writers are available for Dallas book projects from across the team; they work remotely, so the match is made on experience rather than location.

Review the Work Throughout Production

You see the work at each stage and approve it before it moves on. On writing packages from the 100-page tier up, revisions are unlimited; the entry-level 50-page package includes limited revisions. If a writer match isn't working, you can ask for a different writer.

Continue Into Publishing Without Changing Providers

Authors who start with writing or editing can move straight into cover design, formatting and distribution with the same project manager, so files, style decisions and context carry over instead of being handed to a new company.

Writing and Publishing a Book in Dallas

Professional help covers the writing, editing and production. What it can't replace is other writers reading your pages and readers meeting you in person, and Dallas has more of both than most first-time authors realize.

The metroplex has a writers' workshop that has been running read-and-critique sessions for nearly five decades, a nonprofit literary center offering low-cost monthly workshops, fiction meetups and a shared calendar of literary events. Once the book is out, Dallas has independent bookstores that host readings and signings, an annual local-author day at a flagship bookstore and a university-run literary festival. Dallas authors can explore any of these independently; none requires a particular publisher.

Dallas Writing Groups and Resources for Authors

Dallas-area authors looking for community while they write can explore these.

DFW Writers' Workshop

Weekly read & critique · Grapevine

Members read their work aloud every Wednesday at 7 p.m. and get direct critique; visitors can attend twice a year before joining. Members have published more than 350 books traditionally, and the group runs the annual DFWCon conference.

Publishing for Readers Beyond Dallas

Book publishing in Dallas, TX doesn't mean publishing only for Dallas. The same files that stock a local signing table are listed with retailers nationwide.

Print, eBook and Hardcover Formats

Books are prepared as ebook, paperback and hardcover, with each interior formatted to its own requirements. Audiobook production is included from the Platinum publishing package up.

Retail and Online Distribution

Depending on the package, books go to Amazon alone or to 10, 20, 30 or 50+ platforms, including Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play, with library and bookstore distribution from the Gold package up. Distribution makes a book available to order; it doesn't guarantee a spot on a store's shelves.

Author Rights and Royalties

You retain 100% ownership of your manuscript, publishing rights, intellectual property, copyright and royalties, and you set the retail price. Writers of the West does not claim ownership of your work or take a share of your royalties.

From Published Author to Dallas Readers

Publishing a book doesn't create an audience on its own. In Dallas, authors can pursue these venues and events independently. Each has its own programming and decides who takes part.

How a Dallas Book Project Moves Forward

  1. 1

    Tell Us What You're Creating

A consultation covers your concept or existing manuscript, genre, approximate length, intended readers and publishing goal.

  2. 2

    Build the Right Book Team

  3. 3

    Write, Edit and Approve

Drafting and editing move in milestones you review and approve, with revisions along the way. A ghostwritten draft typically takes two to four months.

  4. 4

    Prepare, Publish and Distribute

Formatting, cover design, publication-ready files, platform setup and distribution, typically about a month after the text is final.

Cost depends on manuscript length, its starting condition, genre and complexity, how much writing and editing it needs, and how much design, publishing and promotion you add.
